What Produce You Should Be Buying This Month

Updated: Jun 13

Add these in-season fruits and veggies to your shopping list.

There are many reasons why you might want to shop and eat in-season produce. The first reason being, it simply tastes superior. These foods are naturally ripened and harvested rather than needing artificial treatments to reach supermarket shelves, which can negatively impact flavour and texture.

It can also benefit the environment and save you some pennies. The production costs of fruits and veggies that are most abundant and readily available will be relatively lower than other times of the year. If the produce is locally sourced, this also means less environmental damage with transportation emissions, refrigeration, etc.

Studies also indicate that in-season produce is likely to be richer in nutrients. This is because foods that are not grown and ripened naturally, often undergo chemical processes in order to be available all year round. Along with the lengthy storage and transportation times, this can degrade nutritional value.
